Gothic Font Generator

Gothic means blackletter: the dense, angular hand that scribes wrote across northern Europe from about 1150, and that Gutenberg cut into metal because it was simply what writing looked like where he lived. The name was an insult. Italian humanists preferred the rounder letters they were copying from Carolingian manuscripts, called those roman, and dismissed the northern ones as the work of Goths — barbarians.

Inside the family the styles diverge. Textura is the tallest and tightest, all vertical strokes and diamond feet; rotunda is its rounder Italian cousin; Fraktur, cut in Nuremberg around 1513 for Emperor Maximilian I, broke the curves into straight and bent segments and went on to set German books for four centuries. Fraktur is the one Unicode carries, and the one most of the rows above are made of.

One warning for anyone reading a type catalogue: nineteenth-century American foundries also used “gothic” to mean sans-serif. Franklin Gothic, News Gothic, Highway Gothic and Century Gothic have no blackletter in them whatsoever, and Japanese still calls sans-serif ゴシック体, gothic-tai. Search a font site for gothic and you will get both meanings back at once.

Not for aesthetics. Fraktur letters are standard mathematical notation — Lie algebras are written 𝔤, 𝔰𝔩, 𝔰𝔬, and ideals in ring theory take 𝔞, 𝔭, 𝔮 — so Unicode encoded a full fraktur alphabet in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, starting at U+1D504, with a bold companion at U+1D56C. That is the entire reason you can paste blackletter into a text field: the letters are characters, not formatting, and the field has no idea they are meant to look old.

It also explains the gaps. Five capitals are absent from that block — C, H, I, R and Z — because ℭ ℌ ℑ ℜ ℨ had been encoded long before in Letterlike Symbols, and a character is never given two code points. Every gothic generator, this one included, patches them in from the older block.

The trade is worth knowing. A screen reader announces each one as “black-letter capital C” rather than reading the word; site search will not match the styled spelling; and every fraktur letter costs two units against a character limit, so a 150-character bio holds about seventy-five of them. The rows with combining marks — struck through, slashed, crossed — add one more unit per letter on top.

It works anywhere a field stores whatever you give it: display names on Instagram, TikTok and Twitch, a Discord nickname or server name, Steam and Spotify profile names, playlist titles, captions, bios. It does not work in the @handle underneath — those are validated down to letters, numbers, underscores and full stops — nor in most sign-up forms, addresses or anything that has to be searched for later.

Legibility is the other limit, and it is not a modern squeamishness: blackletter lowercase was hard to read in 1800 too. Keep it to a name, a title or a short line, and leave the sentence underneath in plain letters. All-caps fraktur reads better than lowercase at small sizes, which is why the spaced capitals row is there.

For anything printed or posted as artwork — a poster, a shirt mock-up, a banner, a cover — the PNG is the better answer, because the picture tab gives you the weight and the colour that Unicode cannot.
