How it works

How to get a Minecraft username?

  1. Give it a seed

    A name, a nickname, a mob or a block. That word stays in, or under, every name that comes back.

  2. Pick a playstyle and a style, or don’t

    PvP, redstone, SMP — cool, cute, OG. Set neither and “Surprise me” decides for you.

  3. Tick the human box

    One Cloudflare Turnstile box and the list is yours. It normally ticks itself before you get there.

  4. Claim it at minecraft.net

    Ten names with the reasoning attached. Type one into Profile → Profile Name at minecraft.net and Mojang says there and then whether it’s taken. After that, the same name in blocky pixel title lettering is what puts it on a server banner.

How does it get an idea into sixteen characters?

By building short from the start. It blends your seed with a block, a mob or a biome rather than bolting a second full word onto the end, and it favours words that stay legible over a nametag. Anything still over sixteen comes back badged, so you can trim it before you spend a name change on it.

Are the names it suggests available in Minecraft?

Not guaranteed. Sign in at minecraft.net, open Profile → Profile Name, type the name and it tells you if it’s taken before you save.

What are Minecraft’s actual username rules?

For Java Edition: 3 to 16 characters — letters, numbers and underscores only. No spaces, periods or hyphens, and it must be unique. Capitals are kept for display, but Wren and wren count as the same name.

Does this work for Bedrock Edition?

Bedrock uses your Xbox gamertag rather than a Minecraft profile name. New gamertags are 12 characters or fewer and may include spaces, so pick one of the shorter ideas — a taken gamertag gets a # and numbers on the end instead of being refused.

How often can I change my Minecraft name?

Once every 30 days, for free. Your old name is held for you for 37 days, then anyone can take it — and servers track you by UUID, so ranks and bans follow the account, not the name.

What makes a good Minecraft username?

Short, easy to say on a call, no long digit strings. Anything readable in a kill feed or over a nametag at a glance beats something clever nobody can spell.
