How it works
How to make Roblox-style text
Type the line
A game title, a group name, a username — whatever the image has to say. It is drawn on a canvas in your browser as you type, and nothing is uploaded.
Pick a look
9 styles, each one showing your own words. Logo black is the wordmark register; Thumbnail outline is the one that holds up over a screenshot.
Set the background
Transparent to drop the words onto a thumbnail, white for a game icon, or the style’s own panel. The colour picker overrides the fill if you want your game’s palette.
Download, or copy letters instead
Download PNG saves the image at full canvas size. Need it over a screenshot? Add text to an image composites the two. For a display name, switch to the Display-name letters tab.

What the Roblox font actually is
There is no Roblox font to download. The wordmark is a custom geometric sans the company owns — commonly identified as a redrawn Gilroy ExtraBold — and the type across the site and app is Builder Sans, commissioned for the 2022 brand refresh. Neither ships as a file anyone can install.
What people recognise is not the exact letterforms anyway. It is the build: circular bowls, flat shoulders, tight spacing, everything set very heavy. Three open-licence typefaces get close enough that nobody looking at a thumbnail would query it. Montserrat Black is the geometric one and the nearest to the wordmark. Russo One is squarer and more mechanical, which suits a racing, tower or war title. Lilita One is fat and slightly rounded, and it is the one that holds a thick black outline without its counters filling in — which is why the thumbnail looks are built on it.
For context on the red style: the logo before 2017 was red and all-caps, which is why that colour still reads as the platform to anyone who played then. The 2017 redesign replaced it with the black wordmark people picture now. If you are after the other blocky-game look, the Minecraft-style lettering generator is a pixel face rather than a geometric one.
Where it lands
Which Roblox fields take styled characters?
Almost every text field on Roblox is filtered, which makes this different from styling a bio on Instagram. Two rules are worth knowing before you spend an afternoon on a name: the @username is validated against a fixed character set and simply refuses anything else, and every other field is read by the text filter, which can reject a save or replace what you wrote with hash marks. The image fields are the exception — no filter reads letterforms in a PNG.
| Field | Limit | Styled text | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| @username | 3–20 characters | No | Letters, digits and at most one underscore, never at the start or the end. Anything else is refused on save, and a change costs Robux. |
| Display name | 3–20 characters | Sometimes | The name shown above the @handle, and the field most styles have a chance in. It is filtered, it need not be unique, and it can only be changed once every seven days. |
| Profile About | 1,000 characters | Sometimes | Longer, so a styled first line and plain text under it reads better than a styled block. |
| Group name and description | 50 / 1,000 characters | Sometimes | Filtered on save like everything else. Put the lettering in the group banner image instead — that is what the PNG above is for. |
| In-experience chat | 200 characters | Rarely | The strictest filter on the platform. Unusual characters are a common trigger for a message coming back as hash marks. |
| Thumbnail, icon, banner, decal | — | Yes | An image, not a text field, so no filter touches the letterforms. Draw the line above and upload the PNG. |
In practice
Making a title that still reads at icon size
A game icon is drawn at roughly 150 pixels square in the app and smaller again in a search row, so the only real test is what the line looks like shrunk. Keep it to two or three words — a title is not a sentence, and the words you cut are the ones that were going to be unreadable. Set it in capitals, because same-height letters hold their shape at small sizes where ascenders and descenders turn to mush.
Use an outline rather than a soft shadow. A screenshot behind the text is busy and multi-coloured, and a 0.3em black stroke is what keeps white letters separate from it; a blur just makes a grey smudge at thumbnail size. Download with a transparent background so the outline sits directly on the gameplay, and check the result at the size it will actually be shown rather than at full width in a preview. The same rules apply on a YouTube thumbnail for the video about your game, only with more room to work in.
