MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM — including OBS recordings. The file is read straight off your device and never uploaded, so there is no size limit going in and nothing to wait in line for.
The limits
Discord upload limits
The limit applies to everything attached to one message, not to each file separately. A boosted server raises it for everyone posting in that server, so the same clip can be fine in one place and rejected in another.
| Who you are | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Free account | 10 MB | The current limit, in place since September 2024 |
| Nitro Basic | 50 MB | $2.99/month tier |
| Nitro | 500 MB | The most any account can upload |
| Server boosted to Level 2 | 50 MB | Applies to everyone posting in that server |
| Server boosted to Level 3 | 100 MB | Applies to everyone posting in that server |
The mix-up
Why half the internet says 25 MB?
Because it was true for about eighteen months. The free limit sat at 8 MB for years, went up to 25 MB in April 2023, and was quietly cut to 10 MB in September 2024 — announced in a support-page footnote rather than anywhere anyone would see it. Most guides never caught up, which is why people still get files rejected at sizes an article told them were fine.
If you want to stop thinking about it, target 8 MB. It was the limit long enough that everything accepts it, and it leaves room for the rounding differences below.
Why in-browser
Why you need to compress video for Discord?
A gameplay clip that is just over
A 30-second capture at 1080p60 lands well past 10 MB. Dropping to 30 fps and 720p usually gets it under without the moment being any less watchable.
Not paying for Nitro to send one video
The 10 MB limit is the whole reason the Nitro upsell exists. Compressing costs nothing and keeps the clip in the channel rather than behind a Drive link.
Links expire, uploads do not
Discord CDN links shared outside the app stop working after a while, and file-host links die or get filtered. A file posted in the channel stays there.
Nothing gets uploaded to compress it
Every other compressor sends your video to a server and back. This one encodes on your own machine, so a private recording stays private.
How it works
How to compress a video for Discord?
Open your clip
Drag in an MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM — OBS recordings included. It is read straight off your disk, so there is no upload and no ceiling on what goes in.
Pick the limit you are up against
10 MB if you are on a free account, 50 MB for Nitro Basic, 500 MB for Nitro. Pick 8 MB if you want a margin that works anywhere.
Check the plan
The tool works backwards from the limit and shows the resolution, frame rate and bitrate it will use before it starts — and says plainly when a clip is too long to fit and look good.
Compress and download
It encodes with your graphics hardware, so it is far quicker than the clip is long. The finished file is measured against the limit before it is offered.
