Up to twelve per press. Your choices are sent to our generator — nothing else is, and the notes are not stored.

How it looks in your inbox

The bubble in the row shows about three short lines; a friend who taps it sees the whole note and can reply, and the reply lands in your chats. Your photo stays on this device.

How it works

How to leave a note on Instagram?

  1. Open your messages

Tap the paper-plane (or Messenger) icon. Notes live in the row of photos at the top of the inbox, above your chats.

  2. Tap your own photo

It is first in the row, labelled Your note. Tapping it opens the note box — the one this page’s preview copies.

  3. Type or paste — 60 characters

Spaces and emoji count, and most emoji take two. The music button adds a song clip from Instagram’s library; this page writes the words only.

  4. Pick who sees it, then Share

Followers you follow back, or Close Friends. The note sits over your photo in their inbox and on your profile for 24 hours; a reply arrives as a message.

Before you share it

What makes a good Instagram note?

Shorter than the limit. The bubble in a friend’s inbox is small — a few short lines — and a long note is cut off there until they tap it. Put the point in the first few words.

Write for the people who will see it. A note goes to mutuals or Close Friends, not to the public, so it can be an inside joke, a mood or a question — and a question is the one that fills your chats, because every reply is a message. It is gone in a day, so change it often. For the lines that stay up longer, write an Instagram bio or a caption for your next post, and check anything you edit in the Instagram character counter.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the character limit for Instagram Notes?

60 characters, and spaces, punctuation and emoji all count. Most emoji take two of the 60; one with a skin tone, and a flag, take four. Every note here is counted that strict way, so if it fits here it fits in the app — and the note box on this page stops at 60 the way Instagram’s does.

Who can see my Instagram note?

Only the people you pick when you share it: followers you follow back, or your Close Friends list. Notes are never public, and someone you do not follow back will not see yours.

How long does a note stay up?

24 hours, at the top of your audience’s inbox and on your profile. Sharing a new note replaces the old one, and you can delete it any time: tap your photo in the notes row, then Delete note.

Can I add a song to my Instagram note?

Yes. In the note box, tap the music button and pick a clip from Instagram’s music library; the song’s name shows in the bubble with a little equaliser. This tool writes the words, so pick a mood that goes with the song — or leave the words out and let the song speak.

Can people see if I viewed their note?

No. A note has no viewer list. The only things its owner sees are likes — the heart under a note — and replies, which arrive as ordinary messages in their chats.

Can I use stylish fonts in a note?

Yes, Unicode fonts paste into a note like any text — but each styled letter usually costs two characters, so a fancy-font note runs out at about 30 letters. Keep it short, or style one word.

Instagram Font Generator
How does it come up with the notes?

From the mood, who it is for, the emoji setting and any words you add, it writes up to twelve notes — punchy lines, jokes, aesthetic lowercase ones, quote-style thoughts and questions that get replies — each with a few words on its vibe. Anything over 60 characters is thrown away before you see it.

Is what I type uploaded somewhere?

Your mood, choices and words go to our generator so the notes can be written; nothing is stored. The photo you put in the preview never leaves your device.
