The one rule
Post a grid backwards, not forwards
A profile shows your newest post in the top-left square and pushes everything else along. So the tile that ends up top left has to be posted last, and the bottom-right one goes first. That is the whole trick, and it is the only way a grid goes wrong after you have already published four squares.
Posting order for a 3×3 grid: start with 1 in the bottom-right corner and work backwards along each row, finishing with 9 in the top left. The tool numbers every piece this way, and puts that number at the front of the filename — so whatever sorts your files sorts them into posting order too.
The sizes
What size does each piece need to be
Every piece comes out 1080 px wide, which is the largest Instagram serves — anything bigger is downsampled on upload. Which shape you pick matters far more than the pixels.
