Instagram DP Maker
Turn any photo into a full Instagram DP — the whole picture inside the circle, no crop — or frame it yourself, and download it at 1080×1080 or the 320×320 Instagram keeps.
How it works
How to make an Instagram DP without cropping?
Open a photo
Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP — tall, wide or square, it stays on your device. It opens as a full DP: the whole photo inside the circle, with a blur of itself around it.
Choose the fill and the framing
Blur, white, black or an orange-to-magenta gradient around the photo, or a story-style ring. Switch to Fit the square for a bigger photo, or to Fill the circle and drag, zoom and turn it to crop it yourself. Want just you on a colour? remove the background first, then drop the cut-out in here.
Check it where it will be seen
The mock-up shows the same DP on your profile, in the stories bar, at the top of a post, beside a comment and in the tab bar — in light or dark mode, at the sizes Instagram draws them.
Download and set it
Save the 1080×1080 file, then on Instagram go to your profile → Edit profile → Edit picture or avatar → New profile picture and pick it. Leave the circle as it is — the photo already fits — and confirm.
Setting it
How to change your profile picture on Instagram
The app puts a circle over whatever you pick and only lets you zoom in. With a file from here the photo already sits inside that circle, so leave it where it is and confirm:
| iPhone | Save the file to Photos first (open it from Safari’s downloads, then Share → Save Image). In Instagram, tap your picture at the bottom right → Edit profile → Edit picture or avatar → New profile picture, pick it, leave the circle as it is and tap Done. |
| Android | Tap your picture at the bottom right → Edit profile → Edit picture or avatar → New profile picture, choose the file from your gallery or Downloads, and tap Next (or the tick). |
| Computer | On instagram.com, open your profile and click your profile picture (or Edit profile → Change photo), choose Upload photo and pick the file. There is no crop box on the web: Instagram takes the middle square of whatever you upload, so a square file from here goes in exactly as it is. |
| Phone browser | On instagram.com in Chrome or Safari, open your profile → Edit profile → Change profile photo → Upload photo. |
If your Instagram and Facebook accounts are linked in Accounts Center with profile syncing on, the new picture is set on Facebook too. To take a picture down, the same menu has Remove current picture.
Sizes
Instagram profile picture size
The Instagram profile picture size to upload is 1080×1080 pixels: a square, a 1:1 ratio. Instagram serves a profile picture at 320×320 and draws it smaller than that everywhere, always as a circle — nobody ever sees the corners of the square, not even when they tap on it. Anything under 320 is stretched up and looks soft; anything bigger is only ever scaled down, which is why 1080 is the safe file to give it.
| Upload | When to use it |
|---|---|
| 1080×1080 | The size to upload. Every copy Instagram makes from it — 320, 150 and smaller — is a reduction, so nothing is ever stretched. |
| 640×640 | A lighter file that still covers 320 at twice the density. Fine on a slow connection. |
| 320×320 | Exactly the 320×320 Instagram serves. The smallest file that looks sharp everywhere it shows up. |
Where it ends up, in CSS pixels as instagram.com draws it — two to three times that in real pixels on a modern phone, and the apps are within a few points of each: 150 px on your profile on a computer, 96 px on your profile on a phone, 56 px on the stories bar, 32 px on the top of a post and 32 px on beside a comment. At those sizes a face that fills half the circle is recognisable and a full-length photo is not, so if the whole photo is going in, choose one where you stand out.
Fixes
Why your Instagram DP looks cropped or blurry
Cut off at the top or sides
The app only lets you zoom in on a photo, never out, so a tall or wide picture loses whatever falls outside the circle. Fit it inside the circle here first, and the crop screen has nothing left to cut.
Blurry or soft
Usually a small upload, a screenshot, or a face zoomed out of a corner of a big photo. Upload 1080×1080 and make sure your face fills a good part of the circle — at 32 px, a small face is a smudge.
Black or odd corners
Instagram stores a DP as a JPG, which has no transparency, so a see-through PNG can come back with filled-in corners. Give the corners a colour or a blur here instead of leaving them empty.
Two rings
If you post stories, Instagram draws its own ring round your picture. A ring made here then sits inside that one — fine if you want it, but pick a blur or colour fill if you would rather not double up.
Ideas
Instagram DP ideas for girls, boys and couples
The best Instagram DP is a photo of you that still reads at 32 px. A few that work, and how to make each from your own photo with the styles above:
Instagram DP for girls
A soft, aesthetic DP: the Soft or Warm look, a white fill, and the photo whole inside the circle so the outfit and the background both stay in.
Instagram DP for boys
Mono or Punch on a black fill, cropped tight with Fill the circle. Contrast is what reads at 32 px.
Hidden face DP
A back view, a silhouette or a photo of your hands: fit the whole frame in the circle with a blur around it, so the scene does the talking.
Couple DP
Two people side by side are wider than a circle. Whole photo in the circle keeps both of you in it, with a blur of the photo filling the space above and below.
Everything else
Instagram image sizes, in one table
| Image | Size | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Profile picture (DP) | 320×320 | Square, 1:1, always shown as a circle. Upload 1080×1080 so every copy is a reduction. |
| Square post | 1080×1080 | 1:1. Shown full width in the feed. |
| Portrait post | 1080×1350 | 4:5, the tallest a feed photo goes. The grid shows its middle at 3:4. |
| Landscape post | 1080×566 | 1.91:1, the widest a feed photo goes. |
| Story or reel | 1080×1920 | 9:16, full screen. Keep text clear of the top and bottom, where the bars sit. |
| Highlight cover | 1080×1920 | Shown as a circle like a DP — keep the icon in the middle of the frame. |
Posting a photo rather than setting one? resize it for Instagram without cropping, the same way. Need the same face on other apps? the profile picture maker exports every platform’s size in one ZIP, and the WhatsApp DP maker does this for WhatsApp’s 640×640.
