How to resize a photo for a WhatsApp DP?
Open a photo
Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP — tall, wide or square, it stays on your device. It opens as a full DP: the whole photo inside the square, nothing cut off.
Choose what fills the gaps
A blur of the photo, white, black or WhatsApp green — or switch to Fill the frame and drag, zoom and turn the photo to crop it yourself. Want just you on a colour? remove the background first, then drop the cut-out in here.
Check it where it will be seen
The mock-up shows the same DP in the chat list, a chat header, a group message and the full-screen view — on the dark theme or the light one.
Download and set it
Save the 640×640 file, then in WhatsApp open Settings → tap your photo → Edit → Gallery and pick it. It is already square, so there is nothing left to crop.
Sizes
WhatsApp DP size
The WhatsApp DP size to upload is 640×640 pixels: a square, a 1:1 ratio, at least 192×192. WhatsApp keeps a 640 px square, cuts a circle out of it for every list and chat, and shows the whole square only when someone taps your photo. Upload anything that is not square and the app makes you crop it — which is the whole reason a “full DP” has to be made before it reaches WhatsApp, not inside it.

Where it ends up, in the app’s own dp — about three times that in real pixels on a modern phone: the full-screen view when someone taps it at 360, your profile in Settings at 140, the chat list at 52, the top of a chat at 36 and a group message at 28.
