The community swaps the vocabulary — gaming pulls from queues, pings and lobbies, art from ink and canvas, study from lamps and late hours — and the style sets the shape, from a blunt two-word compound to a soft pair spaced with a period. Your seed survives both: it is the word each idea is built around, and each one comes back with the line explaining the choice.

2 to 32 characters: lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods. No spaces, no capitals, no two periods in a row, and it must be unique across all of Discord.

Discord retired them in 2023. A username used to be shared and told apart by four digits; now each one is unique and written with an @, the way it works on most other apps.

The username is the unique @ people add you by. The display name is what shows in chat — up to 32 characters with capitals, spaces, emoji and special characters — and each server can give you a different nickname on top.

Discord rate-limits it to a couple of changes an hour, and it’s free. Friends and servers stay; anyone who only knew the old @ has to be told the new one.
