How to make a Discord profile picture?
Open a photo
Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP — it stays on your device. No photo? Make one from your initials. Want only the subject on a Discord colour? remove the background first, then drop the cut-out in here.
Frame it inside the circle

Check it where it will be seen
The mock-up shows the same picture on a profile card, beside a message, in the member list and in a reply — on the dark theme or the light one.
Download and upload
Save the 512×512 PNG, then in Discord open User Settings → Profiles → Change Avatar and pick the file.
Sizes
Discord profile picture size
The Discord profile picture size to upload is 512×512 pixels: a square, at least 128×128, under 10 MB, as a JPG or PNG. Discord then shows it as a circle, and much smaller than it stores it — which is why the upload size and the sizes below are different numbers. Uploading the display size is the classic mistake: a 128 px file looks fine beside a message and soft the moment someone opens your profile.

Where it ends up, in the app’s own pixels — double them on a retina screen: the full profile at 120 px, the profile pop-out at 80 px, a chat message at 40 px, the member list and DMs at 32 px and a reply preview or mention at 16 px. The status badge is cut out of the bottom-right each time, and it takes a bigger share the smaller the avatar is drawn: about a third of the width on a profile card, half of it in the member list.
