Why a GIF cut-out has a harder edge than a PNG
Cutting a subject out produces a matte: for every pixel, how much of it belongs to the subject. Hair, motion blur and the rim of anything soft live in the in-between values, and a PNG can store them as partial transparency. A GIF cannot. The format gives each frame one palette slot that means “nothing here”, so every pixel has to be kept whole or dropped whole.
That is what the cut-off control decides, and it is why the colour backdrop exists. If you know the GIF is headed for a white page or a dark chat window, choosing that colour lets the matte be used as the blend it really is — the edge comes out as soft as it would in a still. For a single frame where the edge matters most, remove the background from an image instead and keep the transparency in full.
Transparent
Works on any background, as a sticker or an overlay. The outline is cut hard, so a pixel of trim and the right cut-off are what keep it clean.
On a colour
Made for one destination. The edge is blended into the colour, so hair and blur stay soft — and on a matching page it is indistinguishable from transparency.
