How it works

How to reduce image quality?

  1. Open your picture

    Drag in a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF or BMP. It is read straight off your device — there is no upload bar and no file-size ceiling, and the photo never leaves your browser.

  2. Pull the quality down

    Move the quality slider and watch the picture change. Around 60 goes soft, 25 shows the blocking everyone recognises as a low-quality image, and under 10 it breaks into squares.

  3. Throw pixels away too

    The quality slider never changes the pixel grid. Drop the resolution to draw the photo small and blow it back up — blocky or blurred — for the properly low-res look, or leave it small for a smaller file.

  4. Download the result

    What is on screen is the finished file, with its real size shown next to the original. Download it as JPG or WebP at any moment — no watermark, no account, no queue.

Features

A quality slider from 100 down to 1

The encoder setting itself, not a filter that imitates it. Every step is a real re-encode, so what you are looking at is the compression you are about to save.

A real low-res round trip

Draw the picture at 4–100% of its size and blow it back up to the original dimensions — hard blocky pixels, or the soft blur a re-uploaded photo comes back as.

Re-saves that actually stack

Up to ten passes, each nudged half a pixel off the encoder’s block grid first — which is why a screenshot of a screenshot falls apart, and why a plain re-save does not.

The deep-fried look

Saturation and contrast pushed up before the file is written, so the encoder has loud colours to mangle. One preset takes a photo all the way to meme.

Actual-pixels view

A picture shrunk to fit a screen hides its own artefacts. One tap shows it at one screen pixel per image pixel, which is where the blocking really lives.

The size, before and after

The real byte count of the written file against the original, with the percentage — so “under 200 KB” is something you can aim at rather than guess.

What each quality setting looks like

The scale is the JPEG encoder’s own, and it is not linear — most of the file size goes in the first thirty points, and most of the visible damage arrives in the last twenty. These are the bands worth aiming at, and every one of them is a position on the slider above.

Frequently asked questions

Do my images get uploaded anywhere?

No. The picture is decoded, re-encoded and written back out inside your browser, so it never leaves your device. Nothing is stored on a server because nothing is ever sent to one.

How do I convert a high quality image to a low quality image?

Drop the photo in and pull the quality slider down — 25 is the setting most people mean by "low quality". For a properly low-res result, pull the resolution slider down as well: quality alone never changes the pixel grid, so it can never make a picture look pixelated.

Why does lowering the quality not make my picture look pixelated?

Because those are two different kinds of damage. The quality setting throws away detail inside each 8×8 block and leaves the pixel dimensions untouched — that is the blotchy, haloed look. Pixelation comes from having fewer pixels, which is what the resolution slider does.

How do I get a picture under a specific file size?

The reduced size and its percentage of the original are shown live under the picture, so drag the quality slider until the number is where you need it. Dropping the resolution as well saves far more than quality alone once you are chasing a small target.

Can I get the original quality back afterwards?

No — the discarded detail is gone from the file, and no tool can invent it back. Your original is untouched on your device, though; this only ever writes a new copy.

What is the difference between this and a compressor?

Intent. A compressor tries to make the file smaller while keeping it looking the same, and hides the settings. This does the opposite: the damage is the point, so every control is exposed and the artefacts are shown at actual pixel size before you download.
