How it works

How to invert the colours of an image?

  1. Open the picture

What it does

An image inverter with more than one answer

Inverting a picture is one line of arithmetic — each colour channel becomes 255 minus itself — and that is why every invert tool produces the same negative. What differs is what happens when the plain negative is not what you were after: a screenshot you want to read in the dark, a single channel you want flipped, or a look that lives part way between the picture and its opposite.

A true negative

Every channel replaced by 255 minus itself — the same thing a film negative does, and the same thing your operating system’s invert-colours accessibility setting does to the screen.

Or keep the colours

Flip the light and leave the hues where they are: a white page with black text comes back black with white text, and a red heading is still red rather than cyan.

One channel at a time

Invert red, green or blue on its own for a strong colour cast — red alone throws the picture cyan, green alone magenta, blue alone yellow. Any combination of the three works.

Partial inverts

The amount slider runs the whole way from the original to the negative, so you can stop at 30% for a washed, bleached look instead of the full flip.

Hold to compare

Transparency survives

A cut-out PNG keeps its transparent background — only the colour is flipped, never the alpha. Save as JPG and the see-through part comes back white rather than black.

What is the opposite of a colour?

A colour has two opposites and they are not always the same one. The inverse is what this tool does to a picture: subtract each channel from 255, which flips the hue and the brightness together. The complement is the design answer: turn the hue 180° across the colour wheel and leave the brightness alone. For a fully saturated, mid-bright colour they land in the same place — the opposite of green is magenta either way — and for anything muted or dark they part company. Brown inverts to a pale sky blue and complements to a teal of the same depth.

The two agree only when the colour is fully saturated and mid-bright — pure green inverts and complements to the same magenta. Brown, navy and pastels come apart, because inverting flips the brightness as well as the hue and the colour wheel does not.

Frequently asked questions

Does my photo get uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser on your device.

What is the difference between inverting and making a negative?

Nothing. A photographic negative is what you get when every colour is replaced by its opposite, so "invert colours", "negative image" and "invert photo" all describe the same operation.

Can I invert the brightness but keep the colours?

Yes — that is what the "Keep the colours" setting does. It flips the light and leaves hue and saturation alone, which is what you want for reading a document or a screenshot at night without every logo turning cyan.

Does inverting a picture twice give the original back?

A full 100% invert of a PNG does, exactly — the operation is its own reverse. Through a lossy format it will not quite, because JPG and WebP re-encode the picture each time.

Will the photo lose quality or come back smaller?

No. The invert runs at full original resolution. PNG is lossless; JPG and WebP default to 92% quality.
