They can be. 4:5 is 1080×1350 at Facebook’s usual width — the tallest feed photo that still opens without a crop. Landscape posts and link previews are a different job: 1200×630, about 1.91:1. Square 1080×1080 also fills the feed. 4:5 is the one that takes the most phone screen; it is not the only Facebook post size.

Not if the feed is the point. 16:9 is 1920×1080, YouTube and TV. Facebook’s wide post and link image is 1.91:1 (1200×630), a hair wider, so a 16:9 file loses a strip top and bottom on a link preview. A square or 4:5 portrait takes more of the feed. Stories are 9:16, the other way round — 1080×1920, not 1920×1080.

Portrait 1080×1350 if you want height in the feed, square 1080×1080 if the photo is already square, 1200×630 if it is a link preview or a wide landscape. Those three cover almost every post. Phone cameras shoot 4:3; crop that down to 4:5 or 1:1 here rather than letting Facebook pick the crop on upload.

A square. Facebook’s minimum is 180×180, but it is shown at 170×170 on desktop and 128×128 on a phone, as a circle. Upload 320×320 at least — the profile-picture preset here — or 720×720 if you want it sharp on a retina screen. Corners disappear in the circle, so keep the face in the middle.

Because a profile picture is a circle, not a rectangle. A landscape or portrait photo is forced to a square first, then the four corners of that square are cut off by the circle. Crop to a square here with the face centred, then upload — Facebook has nothing left to guess.

Upload 851×315 pixels. That is the size Facebook asks for. It then shows at 820×312 on a computer and 640×360 on a phone, two different crops of the same file, so faces and text have to sit in the band both crops keep. The Cover photo preset here is 851×315.
